Technical Management

The Company technical group is divided into a number of departments based on various parts of the design and engineering process. Concept development and the definition of initial design parameters is the responsibility of the Technology Group, while the Design Office provides the detailed solution to all aspects of the installation. Systems and equipment are covered by the Systems Engineering Group.

Glass conditioning (everything that comes after the throat) is covered by a separate Glass Conditioning Department (founded in 1976), as is Service, which covers all aspects from installation work to planned maintenance and repair during the life of the installations.

Finally, Research and Development is a further separate group, independent of those parts of the Technical Group involved in the daily business.

Hartmut Hegeler

Dr.-Ing Hartmut Hegeler
Technical Manager

The Technical Manager of Nikolaus Sorg took up this position in 2003 after he had spent two years as joint Managing Director of EME.

Hartmut graduated as a Doctor in materials science from the Technical University of Berlin, where he had first studied mineralogy. His first post was with a refractory manufacturer and he transferred to the glass industry when he joined Gerresheimer Glas in 1993. During his eight years with the group and with BSN he held a number of positions, the last of which was as General Manager of the two works in Budenheim and Achern.

Dr. Matthias Lindig

Dr.Matthias Lindig

Research and Development Manager

Matthias Lindig has experience of many aspects of the glass industry. He studied at the Technical University in Clausthal, where he obtained a Masters and Doctorate in glass science. He joined the industry to work for Schott, occupying the posts of Manager of Special Projects and General Manager for melting in Mainz.

Since joining SORG in 2001 as Research and Development Manager, he has been responsible for the significant advances made by the Company in the field of mathematical modelling.

Sylvio Lauerbach

Sylvio Lauerbach

Head of the Systems Engineering department

The current head of the Systems Engineering Department was already working with computers during the 1980s, before going on to complete two degree courses in medical equipment technology and electrical engineering. Part of the second course involved the development of a mathematical model for the calculation of special temperature and flow path distributions in glass melting furnaces. Part of the model that he helped create is still in use by SORG today.

When he joined the Company he was closely involved with the introduction of mathematical modelling. He was promoted to head of the Metering and Control Dept. in 1997 and took up his present post after a reorganisation of the technical departments in 2005.

Thomas Breitfelder

Head of the Melting Technology Department

One of the next generation of SORG technologists, Thomas joined the Company in 1997 after completing his degree in Building Materials Technology at the University of Weimar. There is a strong family connection with the glass industry as both his father (now retired) and grandfather were leading technologist in the special glass industry.

His career with SORG began in the conventional furnace department and now, as head of the Technology group, he is responsible for the basic design parameters of all SORG furnaces.

Roland Kohl

Head of the Design Office

Roland joined SORG as an apprentice draughtsman in 1970 and so is one of our “home-grown” colleagues. After successful completion of his apprenticeship he went on to qualify as a Building Technology engineer (the nearest thing to building furnaces!). He was appointed head of the Design Office in 1990 – the position he still holds.

He is responsible for all detail design issues within the Company and heads the largest single group of Nikolaus Sorg employees – nearly 40 design office members.

Jürgen Grössler

Head of the Glass Conditioning Department

Before Juergen joined the SORG Glass Conditioning Department in 1982 he had worked for a large local producer of machines for the printing industry. He had originally qualified as an electrical technician but after joining SORG he soon became very well acquainted with all aspects of the departmental business.

From 1991 he was Deputy Head of the department and was promoted to Glass Conditioning Manager in 2001, with complete responsibility for all working ends and forehearths.

Special mention must be made of his services as manager of the SORG football team from 1998 to 2006.

Manfred Wagner

Service Manager

Having worked in a glassworks for more than 20 years before joining SORG Manfred is one of the most experienced people currently working for the Company. At Spessart Glas, part of the Gerresheimer Glass Group, his positions included head of the electrical workshop, maintenance manager and, finally, batch and melting manager.

He joined SORG in 1989 and for many years he was responsible for all peripheral equipment for conventional furnaces. Since 2006 Manfred is responsible for Service.
