SOUTH AFRICA - Largest VSM all electric furnace commissioned
With a melting area of 80 m² and a maximum melting capacity of 180 t/24 h, the latest SORG VSM all electric furnace is the largest furnace of its type yet built.

Consol is a leading South Africal container producer operating factories at Wadeville and Clayville, both near Johannesberg, Pretoria and Bellville near Capetown. The Company has operated electric furnaces of its own design for many years.

Two years ago two of the Conpany´s own all electric melters were successfully modified to use SORG Top Electrodes. Subsequently, when a new 180 ton furnace was planned for the Wadeville factory the decision was taken to use the SORG VSM technology.

With a melting area of 80 m² and a maximum melting capacity of 180 t/24 h, the latest SORG VSM all electric furnace is the largest furnace of its type yet built. The furnace features SORG Top Electrodes, the revolving crown batch charger and stepless power variation utilising two large three-phase induction regulators.

The furnace supplies two container production lines and is used tio melt both flint and green glass. Within the first months of operation the maximum pull has been achieved and a colour change from flint to green has been made. Both glass quality and energy consumption are as predicted.
